How this calculator works. It adds your fixed costs (finance, registration, insurance, wages and overheads) and running costs (fuel, tyres, repairs and tolls) for a year, then divides by the kilometres you travel. The rate to charge adds your profit margin to the break-even cost. If you're registered for GST, the fuel price you enter is reduced by one-eleventh and all other costs are treated as excluding GST. Fuel tax credits use the current ATO rate for heavy vehicles on public roads (21.3c per litre).

What it doesn't cover. Income tax, depreciation deductions, empty running, waiting time, and the cost of trailers unless you include them. The example figures are illustrative starting points, not industry benchmarks, and your actual costs will differ.
